The Great Place to Work® Institute was founded in 1991 by best-selling author Robert Levering and organisation consultant Amy Lyman, in collaboration with a team of professional organisation and management consultants.
In collaboration with national List Collaborators in each of the EU countries, Great Place to Work® Institute Europe coordinated the production of Lists of Best Workplaces in all EU countries in 2002/2003.
On behalf of the EU Commission, the first ever List of 100 Best Workplaces in the EU was announced in March 2003 at a high level event in Brussels. Three special awards were given to companies with particular innovative practices in the fields of Lifelong Learning, Gender Equality and Diversity Management.
Expansion into Latin America began with the creation of Great Place to Work® Institute, Brazil in 1995 - our first overseas affiliate. Affiliates in Chile, Colombia, Peru, Mexico, Argentina and Uruguay were developed in subsequent years.
Expansion into Asia began with affiliates in Korea in 1996, India in 2003 and Japan in 2005.
The services offered by the Great Place to Work® Institute are based on the over twenty years of research initiated by Robert Levering and Milton Moskowitz, and first presented in their book The 100 Best Companies to Work for in America 1984 Edition (Addison-Wesley 1984).
The notion of becoming a great place to work was quickly recognized by leaders in a variety of industries, government organisations and educational institutions as a prime means to both improve their workplace environments and, in doing so, their image and financial performance.

The Great Place to Work® Institute started operation in India in 2003, with a local consulting firm. The founding members were Anil Sachdev and Prasenjit Bhattcharya. The Great Place to Work® Institute India Affiliate established itself as an independent entity on 21st May 2007, with Prasenjit Bhattacharya as it’s CEO.
In collaboration with Businessworld, Great Place to Work® Institute India published the Lists of Best Workplaces in India in 2003, 2004, 2005.and 2007. In 2008 however it published the Best Workplaces in India List in collaboration with The Economic Times, the largest circulated business daily in India & the second largest globally.
In the first 4 Studies the Best Workplaces in India was a list of Top 25 organizations. This number went up to be a List of Top 50 in 2008, with participation going up almost by 50%, compared to the previous years.
