History

A Legacy of Three Decades

Great Place to Work® began with an unexpected discovery. In 1981 a New York editor asked two business journalists – Robert Levering and Milton Moskowitz – to write a book called ‘The 100 Best Companies to Work for in America’. Though the pair were sceptical of finding 100 companies that would qualify, they agreed, starting a journey that would lead to more than 30 years of researching, recognising, and building great workplaces.

What was the core insight uncovered by the pair’s extensive research? It was that the key to creating a great workplace was not a prescriptive set of employee benefits, programmes, and practices, but the building of high-quality relationships in the workplace — relationships characterised by trust, pride, and camaraderie. These relationships weren’t a “soft” activity, but key drivers that help improve an organisation’s business performance. The role of trust in the workplace became core not only for that first, pioneering 1984 book, but its 1988 sequel, A Great Place to Work: What makes some employers so good – and most so bad.

These insights led to the founding of Great Place to Work® Institute. Business leaders around the world adopted the Institute’s models and methodology as a valuable way to measure and create great workplaces. In 1997, FORTUNE (in the United States) partnered with the Institute’s research arm to produce the world’s first 100 Best Companies to Work For workplace rankings. Great Place to Work® gradually opened doors in more than 50 countries around the world with more growth slated in the coming years.

Why we do what we do?

Mission

Our mission is to build a better society by helping companies to transform their workplaces. We do this by helping organizations build a High-Trust, High-Performance Culture™ by using our expert knowledge of best workplaces globally.

Video by Our Founder

A Letter From Robert Levering

We believe that every company can be a great workplace.  Great Place to Work®exists to make that happen.

We start with a profound respect for organizations considered by their employees to be great workplaces. The leaders of these companies are our heroes, and we stand in awe of what those organizations represent — beacons of hope in what is too often a sea of workplace mediocrity.

We believe change can best be achieved by encouraging organizations to aspire to become their best rather than demanding that they fix what is wrong. That’s why our approach is positive. By focusing on the examples set by great workplaces, we spread the good news that any company anywhere can follow in their footsteps.

From studying the world’s best workplaces, we have learned that trust is the key differentiator. This applies to all organisations regardless of national culture, industry, size or age. By raising the level of trust in the workplace, companies everywhere can improve their business results since cooperation and innovation depend on trust.

A QUESTION OF COMPETITION

Other firms may offer competitive products and services, but Great Place to Work™ has no competitors. No other organisation shares our unique social mission. Others may help companies make marginal improvements in their workplaces, but we endeavour to help organisations transform their cultures. Great workplaces are qualitatively different because of the impact of trust on workplace relationships.

We believe in changing the quality of work life for all employees throughout the world. As pioneers of this social movement, we encourage all those who wish to create their own great workplaces. Like us, they wish to build a better society for all employees everywhere.

OUR ROLE IN THE WORLD

We contribute to this social mission in several ways:

As promoters of this workplace culture ideal, Great Place to Work always endeavours to maintain the highest integrity. We develop our best workplace lists completely independently, without regard to any business relationships we may develop with any individual company. Our clients are ordinary managers and employees of organisations. Our objective is to improve the quality of their workplace experience.

Finally, we strive to create a great workplace ourselves. We must walk the talk that we espouse for others.
