1. What is your personal approach to making a Great Workplace?
My personal approach is to genuinely care about the employees. I spend a lot of time connecting with people and coaching them to think bigger and better. I also focus on ensuring I have the best leaders for running the business and who are aligned to the objective of building a great workplace.

2. What are the top 2 benefits you see of creating a Great Workplace?
Needless to say one of the biggest benefits of a great workplace is great customer service. When an employee interacts with a customer the inner state of mind reflects in the interaction. In our industry, this is key to our success and our focus on people, besides being intrinsically part of our DNA, is also a business strategy. The second biggest benefit of creating a Great Workplace is the sheer amount of great things that can happen. Hiring people high on intellect, energy and passion and giving them a great workplace is an organization’s best bet on winning the marketplace.

3. What are your top people priorities?
Ensure all employees in the organisation are physically and emotionally safe. Build an environment that is highly objective and free from cynicism or politics. Ensure people stay relevant for the future with things changing drastically in our industry. Share the wins of the organisation and constantly celebrate the successes in order to build pride and sense of family.

4. How has your association with Great Place to Work® helped your business and strategic goals?
The inputs by the Great Place to Work® have really helped our organization in stepping up the engagement levels. Whether it is a senior person or the last mile employee there is a common understanding of what matters and how they are valued. This sense of belonging has been the reason why in a rather difficult industry, people continue to give their best and we continue to be the fastest growing broadband company in the industry.

1. What can your present and potential employees be sure of from a work culture perspective in the organization?
An employee in ACT, at any point in time, can be sure that they work for an organization with a heart and soul. The work culture is a great balance of high result orientation with high levels of care and compassion. Work is rigorous yet fulfilling. Employees can expect the environment to be speedy and will find themselves having multiple opportunities to make a difference if they wish to. They will find an organization that is consciously focusing on providing great experiences and meaningful work. The entrepreneurial spirit will be quite visible in day to day fashion with a lot of self-driven experimentation that constantly goes on. Employees can be themselves as there is a rigour to ensure the environment is free from politics. The system rejects cynicism, negativity and embraces positive energy.

2. What, according to you, is a people challenge your industry is facing?
Indian broadband industry is extremely competitive and highly service elastic. Moreover, the industry is witnessing hyper-competition and the consumer needs are evolving that necessitates different nature and level of capabilities. The first big challenge is the availability of talent. We realize there is no ready-made talent pool for the vastness of our talent requirement. This has led to our focus on developing talent from within.

Customer delight is the superordinate goal for us at ACT and defines all that we do. We believe customer delight can be delivered only through engaged employees who drive things with complete commitment and dedication. Couple this philosophy with a very strong development focus, employees here get trained to handle a huge amount of complexity. We have formal and informal systems that train people for high execution rigour in an uncertain environment and operational excellence at a rather young age. We hence constantly find attempts by competition and companies in other sectors trying to hire our talent across levels. This is our second biggest challenge and something that we cannot take our focus away from. The upside, however, is that the internal culture brings about a strong stickiness and has served us well till now.

3. How are you ensuring a consistent workplace experience FOR ALL your employees, irrespective of their role, age, gender, tenure etc. in the organization?
We believe consistency is key. Culture is not built on one-time experience but on a pattern of experiences. It is also paramount to us that there is no sectional approach to experience as the organization goal is one. We, however, value the diversity of people and allow a lot of localization of events based on where our offices are located. What does not change however are the fundamental organizational values of high values, transparency and equal opportunity. This is achieved through a practice of sharing almost everything with our employees including the principles of various decisions like Merit Salary Increases, Promotions etc.

4. How has your association with Great Place to Work® helped your business and strategic goals?
Since 2010 we have been focusing on the learnings from each annual survey and have addressed the areas of concern. Year on year 95-98% of our employees participates in the survey. The survey is followed by an intensive action planning session where we collectively identify the areas that affect work or the work environment. These actions are then addressed by different stakeholders and communicated back to the organization through roadshows and other forms of communication. On an average 85% of the action, points get addressed every year. This is driven by the executive committee and hence considered a very serious exercise in the organization. The partnership with Great Place to Work® started somewhere around 2013-14 in various forms. While our commitment to engagement was staunch, the inputs from Great Place to Work® gave us a lot of insights into the areas of communication and thanking where we could do better. By incorporating small suggestions given to us, we unleashed a different level of energy in the system. What truly set this association apart was the strong business understanding and interest taken by the team from Great Place to Work® making the suggestions very relevant to the business context. Their approach and dedication always made us feel like they are one of us!
