Leaders Speak

James Munson

Managing Director, Marks & Spencer Reliance India Pvt Ltd.

"It is a proud moment for us to be once again ranked as a Great Place to Work in the retail top 10 list! This recognition belongs to our people who make Marks & Spencer Reliance India Pvt. Ltd a great place to work by bringing our culture and ‘The M&S Way’ to life every day."

1. What is your personal approach to making a Great Workplace?
I believe that creating a great workplace starts with creating and sustaining a great culture underpinned by trust and transparency. Our strength lies in our people and hence, we deeply value their views and opinions. We make sure that our communication approach is not just top-down but ground-up in an equal measure. For example, we launched an initiative ‘Tell James’ through which I invited colleagues to write directly to me whenever they wanted to share an idea on how we could further improve M&S.

In my view, another important factor in creating a great workplace is by focusing on the holistic well-being of our people. Our flexible working model promotes and facilitates work-life balance. Every colleague at M&S follows a five-day work week cycle which is not commonplace in the retail industry.
In addition to the above, I am a strong proponent of empowerment at the workplace. As we aim higher and look forward to doing more for our customers, it is crucial that we empower our people during the decision-making process so that we become more agile as an organization.

2. What are the top 2 benefits you see of creating a Great Workplace?
A highly engaged and motivated workforce is central to delivering a great customer experience and improving service proposition. I see it as an investment for long-term success. As we invest in talent and in fostering a high-performance culture, it also enables us to retain people and save costs.

3. What are your top people priorities?
• Driving the right culture to become more change agile – Today, the retail industry is more dynamic than ever and to thrive in a fast-changing landscape where customer expectations are rising, it is important to drive a cultural transformation where people are equipped and empowered to support the customers better and faster than ever
• Developing people and Succession Planning – Investing in learning and development continues to be a priority. As we grow, it will be critical to developing a comprehensive succession planning framework. Such a framework will enable us to cultivate a talent pool that is well-poised to venture into different roles as the business grows, transforms and develops

4. How has your association with Great Place to Work® helped your business and strategic goals?
Our association with Great Place to Work® has cemented our brand’s reputation and strengthened our position as an Employer of Choice. While it provides external validation of our culture, it helps us understand more about our strengths and development areas as an organization as well as benchmark our people practices against global standards.

Mukta Nakra

Head of HR, Marks & Spencer Reliance India Pvt Ltd.

"Featuring in the ‘Great Place To Work FOR ALL’ (Retail) list is an honour! This industry-wide recognition reaffirms our commitment to foster a high-performance, high-trust and an inclusive culture. The insights from Great Place to Work® help us understand more about our strengths and development areas as an organization as well as benchmark our people practices against global standards. I believe that our consistent focus on driving a culture of learning & growth, empowerment, balance and listening is what makes us a great place to work."

1. What can your present and potential employees be sure of from a work culture perspective in the organization?
At M&S, our culture defines who we are and how we work. It is deeply rooted in our core behaviours i.e. The M&S Way – Talk straight, All in for the customer, Own it and get it done and Make every penny count.

Be it a colleague who’s joined us recently, a colleague who has been with us for years or someone who’s looking forward to becoming a part of M&S, there are certain attributes and people practices that will resonate with everyone:
• Learning and Growth – Our learning programs are designed to provide opportunities for people to expand their skills and aid professional growth and development
• Listening – Ours is a workplace where every voice counts and every opinion is valued giving more power to our inclusive and progressive work environment
• Work-life balance – We care about our colleague experience and ensure that our cultural framework aligns with what people need. In that spirit, we understand the need for colleagues to follow a flexible work schedule. While we have a strong focus on high-performance but at the same time, it is important that our people get enough space in their personal lives too
• Empowerment – We believe in empowering people to do the right thing and explore solutions
• Brand Pride – Being a part of M&S instils a sense of pride of being associated with a brand that has a rich heritage of 130 years of retail experience combined with two decades of success in India

2. What, according to you, is a people challenge your industry is facing?
As the retail industry continues to grow, employee retention is likely to remain a big challenge. Having said that, I would like to acknowledge that our people practices at M&S have manifested into a vibrant engagement model.

Apart from attrition, given the structural alignment of the retail business, it is a constant challenge to drive a consistent culture amidst a geographically dispersed and diverse workforce.

There are areas that I would not identify as challenges but certainly foresee the potential for more to be done. It is important that we invest in building capabilities to shape future-ready organizations and empower people to manage and lead through the changing times.

3. How are you ensuring a consistent workplace experience FOR ALL your employees, irrespective of their role, age, gender, tenure etc. in the organization?
We have a standardized recruitment and onboarding process for all colleagues across the organization. Our policies, operating procedures and processes are transparent enabling a consistent workplace experience for everyone. Most importantly, a common thread that runs through our cultural fabric is a strong commitment to our core behaviours i.e. ‘The M&S Way (‘Talk straight, All in for the customer, Own it and get it done and Make every penny count’). These behaviours are at the heart of everything we do, every day.

4. How has your association with Great Place to Work® helped your business and strategic goals?
Our association with Great Place to Work® has strengthened our employer brand. It helps in attracting top talent, and also in leveraging best practices to drive engagement and retention.
