Leaders Speak

Gurdeep Singh

Chairman and Managing Director, NTPC Limited

1. What is your personal approach to making a Great Workplace?
I firmly believe that, for any institution to become a Great Place to Work, it has to maintain continuous connect with employees for aligning them with the aim and purpose of the organization. This is because efficiency, effectiveness and success of the organization depend largely on the skills, abilities and commitment of employees.

In order to achieve this ‘connect’, made various platforms available in the organization. Recently, we have started the initiative of ‘Meet the CMD’ wherein any employee can send online request to meet the CMD. Also, employees are frequently sought for their suggestions on diverse issues of importance to the organization, ranging from issues like CSR to RE to Profit Maximization.

During visits to locations, I emphasize spending time with various cross-sections of employees, particularly so with younger employees to listen and interact with them on issues of sector, organization, their career and concerns. This and other similar initiatives go a long way towards promoting the culture of Listening in the organization. For downward communication, we have been leveraging our Communication Matrix as well as newly introduced Internal Communication App “SAMVAAD” to reach out to each and every employee.

I also believe that, in a multi-location company like NTPC, it is important to empower our leaders and employees to take timely decisions. In my opinion, each station is like a company and the Head of the Station is the CEO of that Company, and everyone has to contribute to making the company achieve its goals and objectives. Also, We have been carrying out various system improvement initiatives and restructuring wherever necessary.

My primary thrust is to make everyone in the company embrace a culture of Health, Safety and Environment (H-S-E). Each of us has to follow exhaustive system backed up by detailed SOPs which need to comply with nil deviation. We have come out with a scheme of CMD AWARD FOR SAFETY and SAFE PLANT schemes; the former is to recognize individuals who exhibit safety behaviour and make exemplary efforts to institutionalize safety practices at the workplace, while the second one is for results shown by the stations in eliminating reportable accidents.

2. What are the top 2 benefits you see of creating a Great Workplace?
It helps us in becoming an Employer of Choice which not only attracts top talent towards the company but also contributes to existing employees taking pride in the organization and staying on. It also contributes to our business success due to enhanced employee engagement.

3. What are your top people priorities?
NTPC is entering the 4th phase of its growth at a time when the sector is home to multiple players, and the addition of renewables is at an ever faster rate. All this is leading to major disruptions in the power sector, requiring us to be competitive and agile. Hence, my top priority is to build the capability of NTPC employees through a focused approach of training, mentoring, job rotation including location change.

We continuously emphasize Learning and Growth with focus on individual specific developmental need. We have a robust scheme of succession planning that tracks opportunities within the organization and capability of employees, for a closer match.

Apart from this, our endeavour is also to make NTPC an equal opportunity workplace through a transparent and non-discretionary and robust system.

Saptarshi Roy

Director HR, NTPC Limited

1. What can your present and potential employees be sure of from a work culture perspective in the organization?
In today’s competitive business world, where resources and technology are available to all, the only differentiator for success and growth of any organization is the ‘Culture’ in the organization. Over the years NTPC has always placed “People before PLF (Plant Load Factor)”. This is the guiding philosophy behind the entire gamut of HR policies at NTPC. This philosophy encompasses a culture of learning and performance.

We are strongly committed to the development and growth of all our employees as individuals. NTPC has well-defined competencies based talent management systems in place to ensure that the company delivers on its promise of providing growth as well as the challenge to all its employees. The company has a culture of learning wherein employees get tremendous learning opportunities both through classroom and e-learning modes NTPC strongly believes in the development of leadership pipeline and for this purpose, we are providing opportunities to potential leaders for developing by way of in-house programs such as Young Leaders-10X program. Our Senior executives have trained in globally renowned institutions such as Harvard, Wharton etc.

To bring out the best in our employees, in addition to ensuring safe and aesthetically pleasing workplaces, NTPC actively encourages a culture of mutual respect and trust amongst peers, superiors and subordinates. We have created a culture of rewards and appreciation through the celebration of various achievements and recognizing the contributions behind such success.

Apart from the above, NTPC is committed to providing the best available work-life balance for its employees. Far removed from the buzz of cities, our townships are the epitome of serenity, natural beauty and close community living. A range of welfare and recreation facilities including schools, hospitals, shopping centres, recreation centres, club, gym, pool etc. are provided at the townships to enhance the quality of life & the well-being of employees and their families.

We want our present and potential employees to know that we are a “Caring organization” which strives to offer employees a great workplace experience.

They should also know that the Company’s spirit of caring and sharing extends beyond its immediate workforce and customers to the Society and Community also. The Company commits itself to contribute to the society, discharging its corporate social responsibilities through initiatives that have a positive impact on society at large, especially the community in the neighbourhood of its operations by improving the quality of life of the people, promoting inclusive growth and environmental sustainability.

2. What, according to you, is a people challenge your industry is facing?
The Indian power sector is undergoing a gigantic transformation with regard to the sources of power generation and the way power is consumed. NTPC being the leader of the sector fully understands the challenges before the power industry. With a greater thrust on sustainable power generation and consumption with the use of technology, the primary challenge before us is to orient our people to the changing paradigm characterized by transformational changes and tough competition. We realize that we need to refine and hone the competencies of our people and keep them future ready. Our initiatives are underpinned by the understanding that mobility and job rotation is as essential for the progress of the company at a time when it needs people with diverse experiences and capabilities.

Another challenge before us is the fact that the power plants are located at remote places, the power sector faces issues in getting people to serve at such locations. The new millennial generation is attracted by the advantages that a particular location offers. However, NTPC has been bridging the gap between their expectations and the realities at the ground level through infrastructure and facility developments at our townships.

In the changing scenario of increasing penetration of renewable energy, the balancing of diverse sources of power generation with there inherent limitations is an overarching challenge facing the power sector.

3. How are you ensuring a consistent workplace experience FOR ALL your employees, irrespective of their role, age, gender, tenure etc. in the organization?
At NTPC Limited, we recognize the value of a diverse workforce. NTPC Limited is committed to providing equal opportunities in employment and creating an inclusive workplace and work culture in which all employees are treated equally with respect and dignity. It is the policy of NTPC Limited to provide equal employment opportunities, without discrimination on the grounds of gender, disability, caste, tribe, race, region, religion, marital status, beliefs, or colour. The Company strives to maintain an open and inclusive culture that lets talent thrive and keeps everyone free from any kind of harassment/discrimination. NTPC is among the first PSUs to come out with an “Equal Opportunity Policy” and “Human Rights Policy”.

Having said that, we have ‘Structured Redressal Mechanism’ for personal/professional issues raised by employees. In case of any issues, they are referred, initially at the HOD level, and thereafter the issue may be escalated to higher levels at Project/Region. Even after utilizing the above channels, if the issues are not resolved, the employee may raise issues to Corporate HR/Directors and even to CMD as may be required. All the channels of communication for resolving any issues are therefore available to the employees all the time.
