My organization (family) is a great place to work because they have a culture of Fearless, Family, Founder. This culture makes a difference to do work in a fair & healthy environment in the organization. I work here as a family member of an organization. Due to the healthy environment, I can think innovatively and positively and if I make mistakes, I can learn from them. We have a good team because we can care for each other.

1. What is your personal approach to making a Great Workplace? 
Bacardi functions on a very strong ‘Founder’s’ mentality, encouraging every employee at Bacardi to see the organization as their own. It is this specific perspective that helped me shape the way I approach building a stronger culture. Bacardi primos (cousins) are not required to go through lengthy rounds of approval before they can make a decision. As a CEO, it is has been my focus to harness this ‘fearless’ attitude. If they are convinced with an idea, every employee is free to go ahead and implement any decision that they feel is right for the company. This has encouraged several of our colleagues to develop responsible thinking and result-oriented programs that have benefited our organization significantly.

2. What are the top 2 benefits you see of creating a Great Workplace? 
Our employees and our consumers are equal stakeholders at Bacardi. Employees, who have a sense of ownership and belonging to the business, are able to create better products, campaigns, and experiences for their consumers. Similarly, we’ve also noticed that focusing on a strong and uniform workplace culture across geographies, has made processes and global strategies far more synchronized, especially in an industry where inter-market dialogue is crucial.

3. What are your top people priorities? 
At Bacardi, our culture and corresponding people's priorities are built on 3 main principles – Founders, Family and Fearless. Our top goal is first to ensure that our employees feel that they contribute directly to the business irrespective of their role. This is something we’re working towards with our programs like NextGen, where Bacardi gives employees the chance to develop and implement an idea of their own, backed by resources and guidance. Secondly, an important goal has been to ensure that we’re giving our employees the opportunity to learn new things and learn from the best. By our collaboration with universities like Harvard, we’ve had several employees who’ve come back with fresh ideas and insights into the business. 

4. How has your association with Great Place to Work® helped your business and strategic goals? 
Our employees and consumers are interlinked stakeholders for us, making any people & culture initiative integral to Bacardi strategy. Our participation in Great Place to Work® has helped us accurately assess the areas we have improved on while sharpening our focus on other points that require attention. It has also helped us understand whether our steadfast focus on our culture has contributed to improved productivity and better strategic management among our employees.

1. What can your present and potential employees be sure of from a work culture perspective in the organization?
 Our primary focus is to build a culture where employees keep experimenting fearlessly and are confident that their ideas will be heard and implemented. We have several initiatives that address this. Our ‘Fearless Friday Forum’ allows Bacardi employees to meet with our Managing Director for an open, transparent discussion. Another unique program is ‘Next Gen’ Ideas forum- a platform where employees are encouraged to build and propose ideas that will impact the next generation of Bacardi. From all the ideas received, one is chosen to be taken to the next level of implementation with dedicated budgets and resources allocated to the project. The winning primo becomes it’s champion and gets the chance to lead the campaign globally. It is a firm organizational focus that every employee can change/develop the business if only given the chance. The Founder’s framework is driven towards encouraging an entrepreneurial spirit where our primos know that they can influence and impact the environment they work in.

2. What, according to you, is a people challenge your industry is facing? 
Today, a lot of organizations like Bacardi have very young, millennial workforces who expect their individuality to be recognized. Often, HR programs and polices follow the rigid approach of ‘one-size-fits-all’ leading to several employees feeling dissatisfied and dissociated with their work. Organizations need to understand that each employee is unique, with different personalities, needs, and working styles. At Bacardi, we’re working to address this by introducing flexibility into each of our work programs and by constantly giving employees more ownership. 

3. How are you ensuring a consistent workplace experience FOR ALL your employees, irrespective of their role, age, gender, tenure, etc. in the organization? 
We make sure that the employment opportunities we create cater to every set of our primos and more that, that they’re engaging and fun for everyone! Each year, all Bacardi employees on Founder’s Day, are invited to be bartender’s with ‘Back- to-the-Bar’ Initiative that helps the Bacardi employees relive our legacy story but in much more fun, interactive and social-media friendly manner. Our NextGen program relies on the premise that no matter how young an employee you may be, you can develop and lead a campaign that will affect the way Bacardi will function over the next few years. Several of our primos have jumped roles cross-functionally, from category heads to marketing drivers, from trade managers to communication leads. Many have gone on to lead teams in other countries and continents, even if they haven’t worked in the market. This flexibility within our culture allows primos to hone their existing talents and pursue other ones they may be inclined to, something every employee, old and young, are now seeking. When it comes to learning and development, we have options across the board. Our ‘Emilio Bacardi Harvard Business School Leadership Program’ gathers an intake of Bacardi’s top talent from across the globe to participate in a highly competitive executive education program. We have another partnership with Miami University and with Harvard for a mid-career support program for our more seasoned employees. At Bacardi, if you have an idea or if you want to learn something, all you have to do is just do it. The organization will support you, irrespective of your role, age or team.

4. How has your association with Great Place to Work® helped your business and strategic goals? 
Great Place to Work® has enabled us to identify which programs and initiatives have actually influenced our workforce helping us refine them further. Being identified as a ‘Great Place to Work’ has helped us gain recognition beyond the brand, to Bacardi as an organization, an equally crucial factor that contributes to growing business and reputation.
