Townhalls with a Twist

Town halls play a vital role in providing employees with information and strategic direction, building culture, and offer an opportunity to connect personally with the executive team. A format that usually relies on one-way communication from executives to employees. However, at SAS Research & Development rather than following the usual route, a bottom-up or inverted pyramid approach is implemented where no manager would present the highlights and achievements. Each town hall employees enthusiastically get together to present team updates in the most creative manner - from hosting talk shows to interesting Bollywood skits, thus breaking the monotony by creatively engaging the workforce.

The kind of encouragement and support provided by SAS for innovation is exemplary, we get to learn new technologies and smart way to achieve our core tasks along with a flexibility to own them. It manages a perfect balance between innovation, work-life, product delivery and career development. I personally participated in more than 3 out of the box initiative in last one year, it really helped me learn new technologies without investing any of my personal time.

Employee Testimonial

The push that our organisation give to us to balance our professional and personal life is something I really appreciate. There are a lot of unique things and services provided for eg: the recreation programs, the fitness programs (yoga) and what not. The uniqueness about it, is it really cares what employees want and work with them to achieve it.

Moti Thadani

Head – Research & Development, SAS Research and Development (India) Pvt. Ltd.

1. What is your personal approach to making a Great Workplace?
I strongly believe that there is a direct correlation between our culture and our business success. Once we, as a team, believe that we are a Great Workplace, we see the entire organization functioning at an altogether higher level of efficiency and quality. My personal approach to making a Great Workplace is to clearly communicate this purpose in creating a Great Workplace, to listen to what team members have to say about this purpose and to engender mutual respect for our individual efforts towards achieving this purpose.

2. What are the top 2 benefits you see of creating a Great Workplace?
People’s trust in the leadership at SAS and in each other is high as a result of our unflagging efforts to create a Great Workplace. With trust being high, collaboration is easy and the pace at which the organization works is sped up thus delivering high-quality products more efficiently. Another benefit is that team members feel empowered to find solutions to problems/issues, knowing that their leaders will support them. People are more energized and motivated to ensure the organization works like a well-oiled machine.

3. What are your top people priorities?
Treating employees like they make a difference (so that they do make a difference) is a key people approach at SAS. Another priority is instilling the SAS Values of Curious, Accountable, Authentic and Passionate in our people. Our SAS Values encourage us to challenge assumptions in creative and forward-thinking ways, to exceed what is expected from us, to lead with integrity and to commit to excellence in everything we do.

4. How has your association with Great Place to Work® helped your business and strategic goals?
Colleagues, partners, customers and our team members all view our organization with new-found respect which reflects the excellent character and the high competence that a Great Workplace promises. They know we offer high integrity, good intent, excellent capabilities and a track record of delivering results that exceed expectations. This makes it easier to work across language and geographical distance barriers as well as to navigate the occasional hiccup. Over the years this has helped our organization take responsibility for more complex and more autonomous projects.

Head - Human Resources, SAS Research and Development (India) Pvt. Ltd.

1. What can your present and potential employees be sure of from a work culture perspective in the organization?
‘What keeps you inspired in SAS’ is my favourite question in stay interviews, and the answers that I receive have remained the same over the last several years. Meaningful work, Empowerment, and Inspiring work environment. And that’s what we promise to our current and potential employees.

2. What, according to you, is a people challenge your industry is facing?
There is no dearth of talent in India, but hiring people who are cultural fit is a challenge. At SAS, we need leaders at all levels. We want people who are passionate about what they do and bring that energy to work every day. We need people who challenge and push each other to achieve excellence. Finding such talent requires efforts, time, and commitment from everyone involved in hiring.

3. How are you ensuring a consistent workplace experience FOR ALL your employees, irrespective of their role, age, gender, tenure etc. in the organization?
We believe in an equitable distribution of profits and programs. We are a single status company. When it comes to the choice of benefits connected to career, life, money or health, there is no division in the title. Our R&D Head and a new hire enjoy similar privileges. We believe that the power of diversity is unleashed when we respect and value differences. Our culture inspires people with different experiences or backgrounds to work together. The respect with which each one interacts in the workplace is something that people haven’t seen elsewhere. Additionally, unique workplace programs support us to build a strong multi-generational workforce where each one feels special and important.

4. How has your association with Great Place to Work® helped your business and strategic goals?
The equation is simple. SAS being a great workplace naturally attracts great talent. Great talent helps us to maintain our leadership position in the business. Due to our great workplace reputation and great talent, customers are confident about doing business with us.
