Dollars for Doers

The Symantec Dollars for Doers program encourages and rewards sustained volunteerism by making a monetary contribution to the organizations where employees volunteer their time. Symantec makes a $15 donation for every hour of volunteer service that an employee contributes.  This program has a maximum cash donation equivalent of $1000 per employee, each calendar year.  The Dollars for Doers Match is available to all full or part-time Symantec employees worldwide.

The Global Service Week

Global Service Week (GSW) is a company-wide, week-long initiative where Symantec employees are encouraged to give back and work alongside their colleagues to help non-profits and local organizations. Symantec encourages employees to volunteer a minimum of one hour during the week. GSW is designed to encourage employees to volunteer during work hours, using Symantec Service Time (SST).  It is a great way for teams to work together. In fact, research shows employees say volunteering with co-workers strengthens work relationships. While there will be many teams-supported activities, employees can also volunteer on their own working with causes they are personally interested in. Additionally, for employees that work from home or in remote locations, individual or virtual volunteering is not only supported, but encouraged. In India, Symantec clocked 2400 employee-volunteering hours during the Global Service Week 2018 conducted in October. This has resulted in donations of 36,000 USD (INR 25 lakhs) under the Dollars for Doers program.

Right from day 1 of my working here, Symantec has been a great place to learn, be it w.r.t cutting edge technology or market disrupting trends. The focus on technology has always been towards stability/ customer centric. But that direction has also led us in huge cost savings, thus making the best of both technology and cost. Work culture is pretty open and people are always willing to help each other, and one place I would recommend to come and work for (work with)

Our mission is to make the world a cyber-safe place. This purposeful mission instills a sense of ownership & pride in every Symantec employee and drives them to think of better, proactive and innovative ways of winning the relentless war against cybercrime. This by itself is very exciting. Our culture is employee-centric - Our ongoing communication and engagement with employees ensures that there is transparency with regards to business decisions and work environment. This is coupled with a sincere intent to create a supportive ecosystem that fosters a free, fair, inclusive & a fun culture enabling employees to bring their whole self to work and deliver their best every day. 

2. What, according to you, is a people challenge your industry is facing? 
The security landscape is becoming increasingly complex and all-pervasive. Technology’s influence on every aspect of life continues to increase. Global, geographically dispersed organizations, abundant use of technology in the workplace, automation, use of multiple gadgets are some of the contributing factors that provide cybercriminals with a wide range of organizational vulnerabilities to exploit. To meet such dynamic & complex cybersecurity challenges of the present and future, the industry needs people who are technically strong with a deep knowledge of cybersecurity. In the above backdrop, we face an acute shortage of readily deployable experts in the cybersecurity space. People who can find the gap in existing technologies to solve the changing threat landscape problems, along with a security mindset are challenging to find and retain. 

3. How are you ensuring a consistent workplace experience FOR ALL your employees, irrespective of their role, age, gender, tenure, etc. in the organization?
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is now an integral part of our culture tenets. A strong commitment of the leadership towards developing and sustaining an open, collaborative work culture that allows people to innovate and contribute in a respectful way is our pursuit. We communicate openly and freely. We have four distinct employee resource groups – these are focused on the experience & development of women, employees in the LGBTQ community, persons with disability & new professionals. Our endeavor is to embed diversity in everything we do include the way we attract, groom, develop and retain our talent.
