Bangalore International Airport LimitedBangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) is a public limited company – formed under The Companies Act, 2013 – to build, own and operate the Greenfield Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru (BLR Airport) for a 60-year concession period. Private promoters hold a 74% stake (Anchorage Infrastructure Investments Holdings Limited: 43.64%; FIH Mauritius Investments Limited: 10.36% and Siemens Projects Ventures: 20%), while the Government (Karnataka State Industrial & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited: 13%; Airports Authority of India: 13%) hold the remaining 26%. The Airport was constructed on a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model – a first for airports in India – based on a Concession Agreement signed in July 2004 between the Government and BIAL. Establishing a legal framework played a critical role in providing a safe and encouraging environment for private promoters. Thereafter, other Greenfield airport contracts in the Country were signed on a similar model. The first phase of the BLR Airport concluded in March 2008 and it became operational on May 24, 2008 – 33 months from the start of construction. The Master Plan was developed to fulfill the need for an operationally efficient and passenger-friendly Airport. Enhancement of Terminal 1 was undertaken in August 2011 due to the increasing passenger and air traffic. This involved the extension of the terminal building in both directions, and it became operational in early 2014. BLR Airport closed the Financial Year 2019-20 with more than 33 million passengers per year (MPPA), facilitating 231,051 Air Traffic Movements (ATMs) and processing 374,181 Metric Tonnes of Cargo. As the busiest Airport in South India and the third largest in the Country, BLR Airport achieved a significant milestone in June 2022 by crossing the 250 million passenger mark since the launch of its operations or Airport Opening Day (AOD). The BLR Airport plays a key role in driving the economy of the region – offering a wide air-route network, connecting Bengaluru to the rest of the world. INFRASTRUCTURE BOOST As passenger traffic continues to grow exponentially, BLR Airport has undertaken a massive Rs. 13,000-crore capacity expansion to cater to the long-term demands of the aviation market in India. This includes construction of a new terminal, a new multi-modal transport hub, expansion of road infrastructure and utilities. The new CAT III runway commenced operations from December 6, 2019. Inclement weather and foggy conditions will have minimal impact on the movement of aircraft. This makes BLR Airport the only Airport in South India and sixth in the Country to have CAT III runway. BLR Airport’s Terminal 2 was inaugurated by the Honourable Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi on November 11, 2022. The 255,000 square-meter T2 is built on the principles of four pillars: technological leadership; being a terminal in a garden; environmental and ecological stewardship; and a celebration of Karnataka’s rich heritage and culture. The design capacity of T2 in Phase 1 is 25 MPPA. The combined design capacity of both T2 and T1 will be ~51.5 million passengers per annum which is expected to rise to close to 60 million after the refurbishment of Terminal 1. With this development, the Airport will continue to create more opportunities for business and fuel the economic growth of the region and Country.
